ABOUT LODI, CALIFORNIA

The Lodi wine region in California is renowned for its exceptional grape-growing conditions and diverse array of high-quality wines. Located in the northern part of California's Central Valley, Lodi benefits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by warm days and cool nights, ideal for grape cultivation. The region is perhaps best known for its old-vine Zinfandel, with some vineyards boasting vines that are over 100 years old. These Zinfandels are celebrated for their bold fruit flavors, spice notes, and robust structure. In addition to Zinfandel, Lodi produces a wide range of other varietals including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and more recently, Italian and Spanish varieties such as Tempranillo and Barbera. The sandy loam soils and the cooling influence of the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta contribute to the wines’ balance and complexity. Lodi has gained recognition for its commitment to sustainable winegrowing practices and its community of multi-generational family-owned wineries. With its rich viticultural history and dedication to quality, Lodi continues to be a prominent and respected wine region in California and beyond.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Here are five excellent food pairings for Old Vine Zinfandel:

  1. Mole Poblano: The rich, complex flavors of mole poblano, a Mexican sauce made with chili peppers, chocolate, and spices, complement the robust fruit and spice notes of old vine Zinfandel. The wine’s acidity and tannins provide a refreshing contrast to the sauce’s depth and intensity.

  2. Pulled Pork Tacos: The smoky, tender flavors of pulled pork tacos with spicy salsa verde pair beautifully with Zinfandel’s ripe berry fruitiness and peppery undertones. The wine’s bold flavors stand up well to the richness of the pork and enhance the overall dining experience.

  3. Moroccan Lamb Tagine: The savory, aromatic spices of Moroccan lamb tagine, with ingredients like cinnamon, cumin, and dried fruits, harmonize with Zinfandel’s complex fruit flavors and hints of spice. The wine’s robust structure complements the tender lamb and rich sauce.

  4. Blackened Catfish: The bold, Cajun-inspired flavors of blackened catfish, with its spicy seasoning and smoky char, match well with Zinfandel’s ripe berry fruit and peppery spice. The wine’s acidity helps balance the dish’s heat while enhancing its flavors.

  5. Grilled Watermelon Salad: Grilled watermelon slices with feta cheese, mint, and a balsamic glaze create a refreshing and unexpected pairing with old vine Zinfandel. The wine’s fruity profile complements the sweet, caramelized notes of the grilled watermelon, while its acidity cuts through the richness of the cheese and balsamic, offering a unique and delightful contrast.
